The Holy See Press Office has released the first image of Pope Francis since his hospitalisation on February 14, 2025. The picture, which surfaced on Sunday, shows the Pope seated in a wheelchair after participating in the celebration of the Eucharist.
According to the Vatican, the release of the photograph marks the first time the pontiff has been seen since he was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. “The Holy See Press Office has released a picture of Pope Francis in prayer after concelebrating the Eucharist this morning. It’s the first to be released since the Pope’s hospitalisation on 14 February,” a statement from the Vatican confirmed.
Pope Francis has been undergoing treatment for double pneumonia and other infections. Reports indicate that he has faced multiple respiratory crises during his hospital stay. Despite these challenges, Vatican officials have assured that he remains stable and continues on the path to recovery.
The Eucharist, which the Pope participated in, holds great significance for Catholic Christians. It is the sacrament in which, according to Catholic belief, the bread and wine consecrated during Mass become the body and blood of Christ.
The release of the Pope’s image comes at a time when Catholics worldwide have been praying for his recovery. The faithful have been particularly reflective as they marked the 12th anniversary of Pope Francis’s election as pontiff on March 13, 2013. Many have expressed their concerns and support, urging for his swift recuperation.
During his time in the hospital, Pope Francis has remained engaged with the Vatican’s spiritual activities, albeit remotely. Earlier this month, an audio recording of him speaking in his native Spanish was played in St Peter’s Square in Vatican City, offering some reassurance to followers. Additionally, he has participated in spiritual exercises of prayers and meditation through a video link, though he had not been seen until Sunday’s photograph release.
As Pope Francis continues his recovery, Catholics around the world remain hopeful for his return to full health, with prayers and messages of support pouring in for the beloved pontiff.
