Nairobi residents woke up to heavy downpours on Wednesday morning, as intense rainfall swept through the city and its surrounding areas. The rains, which began at different times across various parts of the metropolis, caused major disruptions to traffic, resulting in delays for commuters heading to work and school.
The Kenya Meteorological Department had previously issued a forecast predicting the heavy rains. In a statement released on Sunday, the department warned that rainfall would persist in several parts of the country, with some areas expected to experience isolated heavy downpours.
“Rainfall is expected to continue over several parts of the country. Isolated heavy rainfall events are likely in some areas,” read the statement from the Kenya Met Department.
Apart from Nairobi, other regions expected to experience significant rainfall include Western Kenya, the Rift Valley, the Central Highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the South-Eastern Lowlands, as well as sections of the Coast, North-Eastern, and North-Western Kenya.
The department has urged Kenyans, especially those in areas prone to flooding and heavy rainfall, to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions. The warning also comes amid concerns over possible temperature fluctuations that could accompany the rains.
Motorists in Nairobi have been advised to drive cautiously as wet roads increase the risk of accidents. Pedestrians have also been urged to be mindful of flash floods in low-lying areas and to avoid crossing swollen rivers.
With the rains expected to persist, residents are advised to stay updated with weather alerts and prepare accordingly to minimize the impact of the adverse weather conditions.
