Kenya has welcomed the signing of a peace agreement by Sudanese political parties, civil society, and military groups in Nairobi, describing it as a crucial step towards restoring peace, stability, and democratic governance in Sudan. The agreement, reached after extensive negotiations, provides a framework for addressing the ongoing conflict and charting a path toward long-term reconciliation.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned solutions. He stressed that inclusive dialogue remains the only sustainable path to conflict resolution and the restoration of peace. Kenya, which played a key facilitation role in the talks, underscored its impartiality amid external pressure and allegations that the Summit aimed to establish a parallel government in Sudan.
The Nairobi peace process engaged over 4,000 stakeholders, including representatives from diverse Sudanese factions, to address the root causes of the country’s prolonged crisis. Mudavadi emphasized that Kenya’s role was strictly to support and enable dialogue among Sudanese stakeholders, reinforcing the principle that lasting peace must emerge from within the affected nation.
“Kenya remains committed to supporting the Sudanese people as they embark on the critical journey of reconciliation and to address the root causes of the conflict in their country,” the statement read.
The peace roadmap signed in Nairobi sets the stage for further negotiations, with Kenya expressing its expectation that all signatories will actively engage with fellow citizens and other parties to ensure that the interests of all Sudanese are fully represented. The agreement is seen as a foundation for a more inclusive political transition in Sudan, which has been grappling with instability since the outbreak of the conflict.
Kenya has also urged the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), and other international partners to continue supporting Sudan’s peace efforts. The country’s strategic role in the region, along with its history of mediating conflicts in neighboring states, positions it as a key player in ensuring stability in Sudan.
“Kenya stands ready to offer both technical and diplomatic support to Sudan, as our shared history, regional proximity, and common goals for peace and stability make this collaboration indispensable,” the statement added.
As Sudan moves forward with the implementation of the peace roadmap, Kenya remains hopeful that all parties will remain committed to the process, ensuring a peaceful and prosperous future for the Sudanese people.
