The long-anticipated trial of medical professionals accused of negligence in the death of football legend Diego Maradona has commenced in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The case, expected to last until July, will see over 100 witnesses testify as the court seeks to establish whether Maradona’s death could have been prevented.
Maradona, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history, passed away in November 2020 at the age of 60 due to a heart attack. At the time, he was recovering at home from surgery to remove a brain blood clot. Prosecutors argue that the medical team responsible for his care failed to take appropriate measures to prevent his death, leading to charges of “homicide with possible intent.” If convicted, the defendants face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years.
The prosecution has labeled the scene of Maradona’s final moments as a “horror theatre,” claiming that none of the accused fulfilled their professional duties. “Today, Diego Armando Maradona, his children, his relatives, those closest to him, and the Argentine people, deserve justice,” stated prosecutor Patricio Ferrari in the opening statement. The case has been classified as culpable homicide, similar to involuntary manslaughter, based on findings that the medical staff were aware of the footballer’s deteriorating health but did not act decisively.
Among the eight defendants are a neurosurgeon, a psychiatrist, a psychologist, a medical coordinator, a nursing coordinator, a doctor, and the night nurse who was assigned to monitor Maradona. The night nurse previously testified that he had observed “warning signs” but had been instructed “not to wake” the football star.
Maradona’s death sent shockwaves across the football world, triggering widespread mourning in Argentina. His contributions to the sport, particularly leading Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup and his infamous “Hand of God” goal, cemented his place as a football icon. However, his later years were marred by health struggles and substance abuse issues.
As the trial unfolds, Argentina watches closely, seeking answers and accountability for the tragic loss of one of its most beloved national heroes.
