The Nigerien army has confirmed the elimination of 15 terrorists during security operations carried out last Sunday in the western part of the country. The announcement was made in the military’s weekly bulletin released on Wednesday, highlighting ongoing efforts to tackle militant threats in the region.
According to the statement, the operations targeted terrorist elements operating along the Dargol-Bangno-Tchekirey-Goundey axis, a known hotspot for extremist activity. The army reported that 13 terrorists were “neutralized” in this area during a mission aimed at securing the route and disrupting enemy logistics.
Significantly, an enemy post discovered along this route was identified as a key logistical base. It was reportedly used for manufacturing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and for launching attacks on military and civilian convoys. The post was dismantled, dealing a blow to the operational capabilities of the armed groups in the area.
In a separate but related operation, the army engaged militants in the village of Darabangou, also located in the western part of the country. Two additional terrorists were killed in this effort, bringing the total number of militants eliminated in Sunday’s operations to 15.
These actions come as part of broader efforts by the Nigerien government and military to combat the growing threat of terrorism, particularly from groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. The western regions of Niger, especially those bordering Mali and Burkina Faso, have been plagued by insurgent violence for years, leading to instability and displacement of local populations.
Military officials reiterated their commitment to restoring peace and security in affected areas. They also commended the efforts of local communities for their support and cooperation during the operations. The bulletin emphasized that such operations would continue with increased intensity to ensure the safety of civilians and the protection of national territory.
As Niger continues to face mounting security challenges, the recent success is seen as a morale boost for the country’s armed forces and a reaffirmation of the government’s determination to push back against extremist threats.
