The Sultanate of Oman has reiterated its firm support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, particularly regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue. The endorsement came during the 7th session of the Moroccan-Omani Joint Commission, held under the joint chairmanship of Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, and Oman’s Foreign Minister, Badr Bin Hamad Al Busaidi.
The joint communiqué issued at the end of the meeting emphasized Oman’s backing of Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, describing it as a “serious and realistic” solution to the long-standing regional dispute. Oman affirmed that the initiative, proposed by Morocco in 2007, serves as a credible basis for resolving the conflict while ensuring stability and security in the Maghreb region.
Oman also praised the wisdom of Morocco’s leadership in pursuing a peaceful resolution to the issue, highlighting King Mohammed VI’s dedication to regional stability. Additionally, the Sultanate commended the Moroccan monarch’s role as Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee, lauding his efforts in defending the sanctity of Jerusalem and supporting the Palestinian cause.
The meeting further solidified bilateral ties, with both nations signing several agreements, memoranda of understanding (MoUs), and executive programs aimed at enhancing cooperation across various sectors, including trade, culture, and diplomacy. This collaboration underscores the strong historical and strategic partnership between Morocco and Oman, both key players in the Arab and Islamic world.
Oman’s reaffirmation of support aligns with a growing international consensus recognizing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a viable pathway to peace. The United States, several Arab and African nations, and numerous other countries have endorsed the initiative, which seeks to grant the Sahara region self-governance under Moroccan sovereignty.
This latest diplomatic development not only strengthens Morocco’s position on the global stage but also reinforces the unity among Arab nations in addressing regional challenges. As Morocco continues to advocate for a political solution to the Sahara conflict, Oman’s backing serves as a testament to the Kingdom’s commitment to peaceful dialogue and sustainable development in the region.
With both nations pledging deeper cooperation, the future of Moroccan-Omani relations looks promising, fostering mutual growth and shared diplomatic objectives.
