Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Alexander Nikitich Darchiev as the new Russian ambassador to the United States. The decree, officially published on Russia’s legal information portal, also names Darchiev as Russia’s permanent observer at the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington.
Darchiev, 64, is a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in U.S.-Russia relations. He previously served at the Russian Embassy in Washington for a total of ten years, from 1997 to 2002 and again from 2005 to 2010. A graduate of Moscow State University with a Ph.D. in history, Darchiev is fluent in English and French, further strengthening his capacity to navigate diplomatic engagements with American officials.
His appointment follows the completion of the term of Anatoly Antonov, Russia’s previous envoy to Washington, who concluded his mission in October 2024. The decision to appoint Darchiev comes after high-level diplomatic discussions between Russia and the United States. According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, an agreement was reached during the February 18 Russia-U.S. talks in Saudi Arabia to expedite the appointment of new ambassadors for both countries. This was further solidified during February 27 talks in Istanbul, where Washington formally conveyed its agreement to Darchiev’s appointment.
The move is seen as part of efforts to restore diplomatic functionality between Moscow and Washington, particularly in light of the strained relations in recent years. The Russian Foreign Ministry has emphasized that resuming normal diplomatic operations is a priority, with hopes of easing tensions and fostering dialogue between the two global powers.
Darchiev’s appointment has been met with approval from Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Lavrov and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov. Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov, who previously worked with Darchiev, described him as a highly skilled and knowledgeable diplomat with deep expertise in U.S. affairs.
As the new envoy takes on his role, all eyes will be on how he navigates the complex and often tense relations between Russia and the United States. His diplomatic experience and familiarity with Washington’s political landscape will be crucial in shaping the next phase of Russia-U.S. engagements.
