Pope Francis spent a quiet night at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he is receiving treatment for double pneumonia, the Vatican announced on Monday. The Holy See Press Office confirmed that despite the critical nature of his illness, the 88-year-old Pontiff has not experienced any respiratory crises.
“The night went well. The Pope slept and is resting,” the statement read.
The Pope was first admitted to the hospital on February 14 after struggling with breathing difficulties for several days. Since then, doctors have been closely monitoring his condition, which remains delicate due to his age, pre-existing lung disease, and overall frailty. On Sunday, medical reports indicated early kidney failure, but doctors reassured the public that it was under control.
The Pope is currently receiving high-flow supplemental oxygen and remains alert and responsive. Despite his condition, he participated in Mass at the hospital, a testament to his unwavering faith.
However, health experts remain cautious. Given his fragile state, the main concern now is sepsis, a life-threatening infection that could develop as a complication of pneumonia. Doctors have stated that his prognosis is “guarded,” emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding his recovery.
Throughout his tenure, Pope Francis has faced several health challenges, including being treated for bronchitis at the same hospital in March 2023. His frequent hospitalizations highlight the toll that age and illness have taken on the first Latin American and Jesuit Pope in history.
Despite his illness, Pope Francis took time to express gratitude to those praying for his recovery. In a message shared by the Vatican, he thanked the medical staff caring for him and acknowledged the countless prayers and well wishes he has received from around the world.
“In recent days, I have received many messages of affection, and I have been particularly struck by the letters and drawings from children,” he wrote. “Thank you for this closeness and the prayers of comfort I have received from all over the world! I entrust you all to the intercession of Mary, and I ask you to pray for me.”
As Catholics worldwide continue to pray for his recovery, many have gathered outside the Vatican in silent vigil. Dozens of faithful have been seen lighting candles at the base of a statue of the late Pope John Paul II, offering prayers for Pope Francis’ health.
With his condition remaining uncertain, the world watches and waits, hoping for signs of improvement in the coming days.
