Tensions in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict have escalated sharply following the Kremlin’s announcement that a temporary moratorium on strikes targeting Ukrainian energy infrastructure has expired. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the truce had not been renewed and stated there were “no further instructions” from President Vladimir Putin, signaling a potential intensification of attacks.
The moratorium, previously brokered under pressure from US President Donald Trump, was seen as a rare diplomatic breakthrough in a war that has stretched into its third year. However, the ceasefire was never formalized or monitored, and both Russia and Ukraine repeatedly accused each other of violations.
Following the moratorium’s lapse, Russia launched overnight attacks, firing at least six missiles and dozens of drones across northeastern Ukraine. The strikes killed two and injured over 70 in Kharkiv and Sumy. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attacks as a “mockery” of the Ukrainian people, especially as they occurred on Good Friday.
Meanwhile, the US appears to be reconsidering its role in peace negotiations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated in Paris that Washington needed to assess the feasibility of a ceasefire in the short term. “If it’s not doable, then I think we’re just going to move on,” Rubio said.
Tensions within the Western alliance have also surfaced. France hosted high-level talks involving US and European officials, but divisions persist, particularly over the role of US envoy Steve Witkoff. Ukraine has accused Witkoff of favoring Russian narratives, especially after he suggested any peace deal should address the status of the five Ukrainian regions claimed by Russia.
At the same time, reports have emerged of a pending US-Ukraine deal that would grant Washington access to Ukraine’s mineral wealth as compensation for past military aid. The agreement, criticized for potentially undermining Ukrainian sovereignty, is expected to be finalized by April 26.
With the energy truce over, peace talks faltering, and trust between allies eroding, prospects for a diplomatic resolution remain uncertain raising fears of further escalation in the months ahead.
