Russia has expressed its readiness to engage in negotiations concerning Ukraine’s future but has categorically ruled out any temporary ceasefire, according to Russian Ambassador to the UK, Andrey Kelin. Speaking to Sky News, Kelin emphasized that Moscow is willing to discuss security arrangements in Europe, but only under terms that align with Russia’s strategic objectives.
“We are prepared to negotiate and to talk,” Kelin stated, highlighting that Russia has a firm position on the matter. He stressed that any agreement must be “serious” and ensure long-term stability in the region.
However, the ambassador dismissed a recent proposal for a temporary ceasefire put forth by French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “We will never accept it, and they are perfectly aware of that,” Kelin remarked, describing the suggestion as “senseless” and “not for reality.” He insisted that Russia would only consider a final settlement agreement, rejecting any interim truce that could be used as a tactical pause by Ukraine and its allies.
Kelin further outlined Russia’s vision for a post-war Ukraine, stating that the country must become a “neutral, non-nuclear state.” This echoes Moscow’s long-standing demand that Ukraine renounce ambitions of joining NATO or receiving Western military aid. The ambassador also reiterated Russia’s stance on territorial control, asserting that regions annexed by Russia are now enshrined in the country’s constitution and should be fully recognized as Russian territory.
“The territorial situation should be recognized. These territories have been included in our constitution, and we will continue to push that all forces of the Ukrainian government will leave these territories,” he stated.
This hardline stance underscores the challenges facing any diplomatic resolution to the conflict. While Russia insists on securing its territorial claims and neutralizing Ukraine’s strategic position, Kyiv and its Western allies remain firm in rejecting any settlement that compromises Ukraine’s sovereignty.
With both sides entrenched in their positions, the prospect of meaningful peace talks remains uncertain. As the war continues, diplomatic efforts will likely face significant hurdles in bridging the divide between Moscow’s demands and Ukraine’s insistence on full territorial integrity.
