The United States has launched a series of air strikes on Yemen’s Houthi rebels, citing their persistent attacks on shipping in the Red Sea. President Donald Trump described the strikes as “decisive and powerful,” warning that continued Houthi aggression would result in overwhelming force.
The Houthi-run health ministry reported at least 31 deaths and over 100 injuries following the strikes. The Iranian-backed group, which controls much of northwestern Yemen, vowed to retaliate, stating that its operations in the Red Sea are in support of Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
Since November 2023, the Houthis have intensified attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, targeting ships linked to Israel, the US, and the UK. Their actions have severely disrupted global trade, forcing major shipping companies to divert routes around Africa, significantly increasing costs and transit times.
In response, the US and UK have conducted multiple strikes on Houthi positions. Israel has also targeted the group, claiming that over 400 missiles and drones have been launched from Yemen at its territory. Despite Western military intervention, the Houthis have remained defiant, sinking two vessels, seizing another, and killing four crew members.
Trump, in a post on his Truth Social platform, accused Iran of funding Houthi operations and warned Tehran of serious consequences if it continued supporting the rebels. “HELL WILL RAIN DOWN UPON YOU LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER SEEN BEFORE,” he wrote, emphasizing the US’s commitment to protecting its interests and allies in the region.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also placed Iran “on notice,” while Secretary of State Marco Rubio reinforced America’s resolve in talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
With tensions escalating, the Houthis have pledged to respond with greater force, raising fears of further instability in the region. As diplomatic efforts remain stalled, the Red Sea remains a critical flashpoint in the broader geopolitical struggle involving the US, Iran, and their respective allies.
