Residents of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough are being urged to prepare for wintry conditions as the Met Office issues a yellow weather warning for snow and ice. The warning will be in effect from midday on Thursday through to 10:00 AM on Friday, with forecasts predicting icy patches and possible snow showers across the region.
The Met Office has highlighted the risk of icy conditions developing on untreated roads, pavements, and cycle paths, especially as temperatures dip below freezing overnight. This is expected to create potentially hazardous conditions for both pedestrians and motorists.
To stay safe during this period, the Met Office advises leaving home at least five minutes earlier than usual to avoid the need to rush. Pedestrians are encouraged to use pavements along main roads, as these are more likely to be treated and less slippery. Cyclists should also stick to main roads where possible, as these routes are often prioritized for gritting.
Cambridge Fire and Rescue Service has echoed these warnings, offering additional advice for those traveling during the cold spell. “Ensure your windscreen is fully cleared before setting off, adjust your driving to match road conditions, and check that your vehicle’s lights and tyres are in good condition,” a spokesperson said.
Travelers are also being urged to check for possible disruptions to roads and rail services before starting their journeys. Areas particularly at risk of severe weather include Thorney, Eye, Stibbington, and the northern parts of Cambridgeshire.
With freezing temperatures and wintry conditions on the horizon, residents are reminded to plan ahead, exercise caution, and prioritize safety when navigating through the region during this yellow weather warning.
