Zetech Oaks, the newly crowned Ingo 7s Division Two champions, are setting their sights on a higher echelon in the National Sevens Circuit. Fresh from their commanding victory in Kakamega, the team, under the astute guidance of coach Ramsfield Matekwa, is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming Dala 7s.
The Oaks’ journey to success was nothing short of impressive. In the Division Two final held last weekend, Zetech Oaks demonstrated their prowess by dismantling Kabarak University with a decisive 33-07 victory. This triumph not only secured their place as champions but also elevated their standing in the national rugby circuit. For Matekwa, this victory represents more than just a trophy; it symbolizes a significant step towards their ultimate goal of promotion to the top tier.
Reflecting on their performance, Matekwa emphasized the transformation his team underwent since the Christie 7s. “For the opening leg, Christie 7s, the team was not in sync properly, but for the Kakamega 7s, the players had regrouped well. They knew what they wanted and worked hard for it,” he said. The coach’s words highlight the resilience and determination of the Zetech Oaks squad, who have clearly learned from their earlier setbacks and are now more focused and cohesive.
With the Dala 7s on the horizon, Zetech Oaks are using the two-week break strategically to refine their skills. Matekwa has outlined their preparation plan, which includes focusing on fine-tuning their attacks and defense. “We still have work to do and improve the team. We have more time since there is no tournament this weekend, so we will be working more on polishing the line outs, scrums, and general play to ensure we are ready for Dala 7s,” Matekwa explained. This period of preparation is crucial for the Oaks as they aim to solidify their position and enhance their performance in the forthcoming tournament.
The move to Division One has been a significant achievement for Zetech Oaks, and Matekwa is keenly aware of the opportunities it presents. “Our main focus is for us to work hard and stay in Division One because there is more exposure for the team. Our target this season is to have more boys playing 7s; if we can have a few boys being called up to the national setup, it will be good progress for the team,” he stated. This ambition reflects the broader vision of the Oaks to not only compete at a higher level but also to contribute to the development of rugby talent in Kenya.
Currently, Zetech Oaks lead the Division Two standings with 39 points, maintaining a seven-point advantage over second-placed Embu RFC. Kabarak University, despite their recent loss, remains in third place, indicating a competitive landscape within the league. This strong positioning provides the Oaks with a solid foundation as they approach the Dala 7s.
The Dala 7s, scheduled for the weekend of August 17/18, 2024, will be a significant test for Zetech Oaks. As they prepare for this critical leg of the National Sevens Circuit, the team is determined to leverage their recent successes and continue their upward trajectory. With their eyes firmly set on promotion and a commitment to improving their game, Zetech Oaks are ready to make their mark and solidify their status as a formidable force in Kenyan rugby.
